We the People

Congressman Jim McDermott (D-Washington) warns the U.S. could turn into a scene from Les Misérables without a ‘we’ mentality in an interview with C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” on Tuesday.”

McDermott is right in a way, but not the way he intended.

McDermott meant government should impose its idea of equality by taking from some and giving to others. That is wrong, and it ends in disaster.

“…we have a lot of people who suddenly think it’s all about me.” And we have a government which is enabling these people through entitlements.

“And it isn’t about me; it’s about we.” McDermott’s idea of We is wrong, too, as its source and strength is government. The correct idea of We is We the people. We the people need equity under the law. We the people need equal opportunity to enjoy our freedom. We the people need the freedom to take care of ourselves and each other rather than the government being our nanny.

It’s a good thing for conservatives to think in terms of We. We would get along just fine on our own.
